In 1896 my great-grandfather, Franchesco Passalacqua, purchased this vineyard with 10 gold coins he earned working as a cook in the California gold mines. The vineyard was already planted and producing grapes according to the property deed. Thus, this part of California’s wine history was planted prior to 1892. A field blend of what old-timers call mixed blacks, it is a blend of over 10 red wine varieties.
The PEARL made history again in 2018 when it became the Wine Spectator’s highest rated zinfandel blend ever with 97 points!
